Dining in The Dark KL

Here's a how a typical bucket list looks like:
Bungee jump
Get a full body wax
Pilot a plane
Solve a Rubik's cube
etc

Not sure how your bucket list looks like but here's one more thing you should add in:
Dine in the dark

I just did and already checked mine off, in KL no less. I've always wanted to do something like that ever since I watched a CSI episode which revolves around a dine in the dark restaurant. I just never thought the concept will actually come to Malaysia!

It is a restaurant called Dining in The Dark KL which is in Changkat. This place is the talk of the town!  Let me tell you how it all went down for me.

Upon arriving, we had pre-dinner drinks while we were briefed slightly as to what to expect and had some safety procedures done (eg: allergy enquiries). You can also choose to warm up first by playing some games that depend on senses other than sight (eg: blindfolded paper clip hunting).

Before heading in, we were asked to store our phones, watches and anything else that glows in a locker. We were then led in by our waiter of the night, Darius. Did you know that all the serving staffs, including the restaurant manager, of Dining in The Dark KL are visually-impaired?

So Darius led us all the way to our seats, he even gave us clear instructions such as "Here is your seat, you can feel for your chair... Your cutlery is on your right.... etc etc"

Upon settling down, it hits me. Wow, it is seriously pitch black in here. I can honestly say that I've never been in such darkness in my entire life until that dinner. People who has achluophobia or is afraid of darkness will definitely freak out. But you know what, even if you're that person, just go for it! After all one of the purpose of a bucket list is overcoming fears.

How dark was it? Let's just say it doesn't make a difference as to whether you have your eyes open or closed.

Alright let's bring out the dishes!

Our appetizer consisted of 3 different dishes (all served in one plate with compartments) with contrasting hot and cold flavors. I'm not going to spoil it for you by telling you what those dishes are, their menu changes every few weeks by the way, you just got to go try it for yourself!

Eating has never been so exciting. I poked around the plate with my cutleries and just place the food (or air) in my mouth without knowing what it is. It's amazing how different food taste when you don't know what it is. Took us a while to figure out what we were eating exactly.

Sometimes I'll reach for my bag and look for my phone only to realize that it's in the locker outside. I guess it has become such a habit for us people nowadays to fiddle with our gadgets at the dining table. So this time we're 'forced' to go through with dinner without any gadgets. It's refreshing really, having to actually focus entirely on food and face-to-face (in this case, not literally as we couldn't see each others' faces) conversations.

Next up is the main course! Like the appetizer, there were 3 different mains in a plate. Halfway into this I was already feeling quite full because we were all eating much slower than usual, really took the time to savor the food.

Darius will occasionally come over to our table and have small talks with us, answering our weird questions and basically just making sure that we're alright. Nicole, the friendly restaurant manager, would do the same too. Oh and that night too Nicole even played the piano while we dined!

Finally came the dessert, which is of course my favorite course. There were 4 different creations and they were all so good!

After dinner, we were led out to the bar to have tea and coffee. The moment we stepped out to the light was like a moment of relief. Light! Finally! And also phones! Finally! Hahaha. The night ended with us discussing the experience (and digesting the wonderful meal we had) by the bar.

If you haven't try Dining in The Dark before, then you must go and try it! It is nothing like any other dining experiences, that I'm pretty sure. An unique experience and great food at only RM88++. Well you know, this will come in handy when you want to impress your date on your bad hair or bad face days. (v^_^)v

p/s: Some fun facts I found on Dining in The Dark KL's website!

When we see a warm bread, we start to drool. When we touch it, it is already too much. We salivate and feel the taste of our favorite food before touching it.

In the end, people believe more in what they see than in the other senses. Try to taste an orange juice and a grapefruit juice with your eyes closed.
You won't be able to see the difference.

One interesting thing: people tend to avoid blue food.
